Dietitian Addie here popping in to share the topic for this month’s dietary education zoom session I held with our members this week. This month we began a series on PROTEIN… a macronutrient quite high on the popularity scale. A component of our food that is necessary for many functions within the body. Protein aids in the growth of our muscles, bones, skin, hair nails and internal organs. Is needed for hormone production and transportation of nutrients throughout our body. Lack of protein can effect energy levels, athletic performance and immune system function.
Should you be “worried” about getting enough if you eat plant based? In short, NO. There are plenty of sources of adequate protein in the plant based world that it should not be something that keeps you up at night. Soy, beans, lentils, nuts & seeds all provide concentrated sources of this important macronutrient. So worried… not so much. HOWEVER you should be intentional about getting in your protein sources just as much as those colorful, antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables at your meals on a regular basis. Leaving out these sources is nutritionally irresponsible. Balance and intentionality is key in a healthy diet. We are what we eat. For me, the goal is to be strong and healthy. I intentionally balance my plate with foods to help me reach those goals.
While the umbrella of eating a high fiber, colorful, well balanced whole food plant based diet is my main suggestion, each person does have specific needs. These needs are based off of current health, activity level, age, and goals of the individual. Calculating your protein needs is unique as well. High volumes are often pushed, but may not be appropriate for all. On the flip side, you may be needing to give it more attention than you currently are. Identifying your ideal body weight, activity levels and health state are important factors to know when calculating your needs.
If you would like further assistance assessing your needs and developing a plan of action to ensure your nutrition is intentional and centered on your goals, working with a plant based dietitian like myself is a great place to start!
