Blogpost: Running Challenge Update

April8 blogpost We are now into a week and weekend with our members daily 5k challenge. Some people run more and some are striving to get to 3.1 miles. Others are striving to keep their streak alive. The challenge is also to walk outside. We Floridians have an advantage, but around an hour outside is usually doable. Different temperatures and climates make one more adaptable to life’s unpredictable conditions. Rarely is life perfect, so why do we need perfect weather. And why are we so judgmental about the weather. It just is and we can dress accordingly. I am training for upcoming ultras. I need to increase my mileage and run more than walk. I do not remember coming back from an injury healed. There has never been a morning when I said, I am glad that is over and go back to running as before pain free. It is a process. Little spirts of jogging and running mixed with walking. Trying to push but not re injure. What is discomfort that arises from stiffness and perhaps scar tissue that needs to be worked out versus lingering injured tissue that will not hold up to the extra pounding of running. Running gait is different than walking gait. I land mid to forefoot running and heel to mid foot walking. There is more of a piston type action running and a rolling action walking. The transition is awkward in the comeback from injury. How did I ever do this running thing smooth? There is frustration with the discomfort of each footfall and then there is not. Now it is back. It is gone. It has moved to a different location. Am I compromising my gait for discomfort risking making things worse. Anything running is better than no running. This is slow. So slow but better than it was. Better than not running. Wait, there is a little better pace. A glimpse to what it used to feel like. I am encouraged. Weekend running wins are two 8 mile efforts completed. No worse for wear. A little more running and hope for longer runs next weekend. Three-o and Sophie get to go together on the weekends which is more fun for all of us. Three-o got to practice not being reactive to several dogs at a distance which was a win for him. We are all making progress I day at a time. I hope you got your run in.
